Scream And Run escape guide: find keys in backpacks and unlock the exit

In Escape you clear a map before a hunter catches you out of lives. School and Play Place lean on colored keys and exit locks. Mines swaps that for a pickaxe-to-blast chain. If the school still feels like a maze, spend a round in Free Roam first.

First session and controls

InputWhen it helps
ShiftRun when you need distance or to break a chase
CCrouch or crawl; hold C when you need a full crawl under low gaps
Shift + CSlide through a doorway or down a short stair run
FFlashlight for dark backpack piles; turn it off in open halls if the beam feels loud
ESearch a backpack when the Search prompt appears
  1. Test controls at spawn. Run, crouch, slide, and flashlight once in open space before you leave the start area.
  2. Pick Free Roam for a clean map pass. Walk classroom clusters, large rooms like the library or cafeteria, and find the exit door so you can reverse the path later.
  3. Switch to Escape when you know two landmarks. Keep a spawn-side anchor and an exit-side anchor. Empty backpacks are normal; move on.
  4. Bank keys at the door. When a backpack pays out, take that key to the matching padlock before you keep looting.

Escape loop

  1. Find the exit early. Note two nearby landmarks. Do not camp the door with no progress.
  2. Clear one room at a time. Check every visible backpack, then return to the hallway junction before branching.
  3. Insert each key as you find it. Match the key color to the padlock. Wait for the open confirmation, then leave the threshold.
  4. Leave when the door is clear. When the live counter and locks say you are done, take the shortest route you can name and finish the exit prompt.

Keys and padlocks

School Escape usually shows five colored padlocks on the exit door: pink, green, white, yellow or gold, and red. Play Place uses the same color set once you can reach the locks. The door panel and any live key counter are the rule for that round.

ColorTip
PinkBank as soon as you find it; do not keep looting while holding it
GreenSame rule: door first, then resume search
WhiteWatch for the lock highlight and open message
Yellow / goldUse the name shown on the door panel in your round
RedOpen corridors are the worst place to carry a key
  • Walk up to a black backpack until Search appears, then press E. Most searches return nothing.
  • An empty result finishes that backpack for the round. It does not refill mid-match.
  • A hit often prints a line like "You Found the White Key". Stop searching and go to the door.
  • Bank each key at its matching padlock as soon as you find it. Opened locks stay open even if you die later.
  • Dying while holding a key drops it where you fell. The key is still in the round, but the hunter just visited that spot.
  • You typically get three lives. HUD lines like "2 Lives Left" and "That was your last chance" mark the end of your run.
  • Some builds offer an extra life after liking the experience or joining the studio group. Check the live prompt before you assume it.
  • Keys do not map to fixed room colors. Spawns reshuffle each round.
  • When the final lock opens, the game may print a last-lock line such as "The last lock gives. The door is open." Step through the exit prompt.
  • Finish every backpack in the room you are in before you cross the hall again.
  • Library, cafeteria, gym, playground, office, and restrooms are useful landmarks for callouts, not fixed key tables.
  • Keep a doorway behind you while you search. Plan the second exit before you dig into a corner.
  • Do not stack the whole lobby on the exit while one player interacts. One crouch watch on the last hall is enough.
  • If a speed or noise meter is visible, full sprint is usually louder. Save Shift for chases and thresholds.

Cat and Thomas

You cannot fight the Cat in the Hat as a survivor. Your tools are movement: run, crouch, crawl, slide, and careful flashlight use.

  • Open corridors favor the hunter. Break into a room and crouch if a chase starts mid-hall.
  • The Cat can use vents and low crawl spaces. A room that feels sealed can still get entered.
  • Desk crouch can work. Standing behind a door usually does not.
  • Audio lines can mean the hunter is close. Leave when you hear them.
  • Turn the flashlight off during a chase. Use it for dark backpack piles, then kill the beam in open halls.
  • If a chase feels worse when you stare the Cat down, break line of sight instead of holding eye contact.
  • Some product text also names Thomas and Free Roam spawn commands for Cat or Thomas. On the school map, plan for Cat unless your round says otherwise.

Mines Escape

Mines Escape is a separate place from school Escape. It drops the five-key padlock loop. You work a tool chain instead: pickaxe, coal, furnace, TNT, then a lighter at the rock exit. Dark Thomas is the hunter most players meet here. Badges: You Escaped Mines / You Escaped Mines With No Power.

  • Pick Mines Escape from the lobby place list. Do not expect the school five-padlock key loop to copy over.
  • Find and equip the pickaxe early. Live prompts often push you toward coal next.
  • Mine coal along tunnel floors and walls, then deposit it at the furnace. Keep returning until the current requirement accepts and a gate or passage opens. Counts are prompt-driven; do not memorize a fixed total.
  • Follow the opened path to the rock-blocked exit. Collect the TNT the prompt asks for, place it at the obstruction, then find the lighter and ignite when the interaction appears.
  • Back off for the blast, then leave through the cleared opening.
  • Against Dark Thomas, break line of sight, use low crawl gaps, and avoid long straight tunnels when you can.
  • If you stall, return to the last accepted furnace, TNT, or lighter prompt before searching for another route.
  • No Power on Mines is a separate badge. Keep lights off through the finish if that is your target.
  • Hide And Seek Mines is another place label. Read the lobby text for roles and timers.

Play Place

Play Place is the third Escape map line (some lobbies still say Playground). Soft-play rooms, slides, tunnels, and party spaces replace the school halls. Ronald is the hunter. You still need the five colored keys, but a gate often blocks the lock area until you power it.

  • Search backpacks for the five colored keys plus a screwdriver. Soft-play mats, dining tables, and nearby bag piles are useful first sweeps, not fixed spawn tables.
  • If a gate blocks the lock area, take the screwdriver to the Gate Power Box and interact when the prompt appears. Finish any skill checks the panel asks for. Lights may drop briefly afterward.
  • Once the lock area is reachable, bank each key on its matching exit lock the same way you would on school Escape.
  • After the last lock opens, leave through the Play Place door. Check around you before a slow unlock animation; Ronald can still catch you mid-prompt.
  • Break chases around corners, slides, tunnels, and ball pits. Turn the flashlight off while you hide, then resume the panel or lock objective.
  • If you are stuck with keys in hand but no locks, re-check the screwdriver and Gate Power Box step before sweeping the whole map again.

Other modes

  • Free Roam. Best place to learn the school without Escape lives. Practice slide, crawl, Search (E), and exit landmarks, then bring that route into Escape.
  • Hide And Seek. No key hunt and no exit padlock loop. Roles are hide or hunt. Cat kit labels you may see include Pounce, Listen, Crawl, and Sneak. Read the live objective when the round loads.
  • Custom lobby. Create New Lobby can set a name, player cap (often up to about 20), Friends Only, No Power, and Hide And Seek toggles. Read the live menu; labels can change between builds.
  • Mines Escape. Second map line with Mines badges and Thomas as the usual hunter. Notes are in the Mines section above.
  • Play Place. Third map line with Ronald. Screwdriver gate, then five keys. Notes are in the Play Place section above.

No Power

School Escape has a separate badge for finishing with no power on. Learn a normal Escape route first. A brief blackout mid-round is not the same as a full No Power finish until the badge actually awards.

  • Keep lights off through the finish if you are aiming at the No Power badge.
  • Custom lobbies can toggle No Power from the start. That is the cleanest practice path.
  • Some builds also let a player spend Robux on a short storm or blackout mid-round. That is optional; check the live shop prompt.
  • Flashlight (F) matters more here; keep landmarks you can read in the dark.
  • Infinite Lives product text names Escape and No Power together. That shows lives exist in those modes. It does not spell out free life counts or key retention. Approximate prices are in the Gamepasses section on the wiki home.

Confirm the escape

Finishing Escape on the school map awards Escape The Cat In The Hat. No Power has its own badge name. Mines has separate escape badges. Full names are on the wiki home badges table. Play Place finish awards are not listed there until badge names are confirmed on your client.

FAQ

How many keys are required?

Follow the exit padlocks and any live counter in your round. School and Play Place Escape often use five colored locks. If the UI shows a different total, trust the UI.

Where do keys spawn?

In classrooms and backpacks across the school, and in Play Place backpacks around soft-play and dining areas. Press E on the Search prompt. Spawns reshuffle each round.

Should I carry every key until the end?

No. Insert each key when you find it. Banked padlocks stay open after a death. Holding a key while you keep looting is how keys end up on a classroom floor.

How do lives work?

Expect about three lives per Escape run. After the last catch you spectate or return to lobby. A carried key drops at the death spot; already opened locks stay open.

Do Hide And Seek and Free Roam use keys?

No. Keys and exit padlocks belong to Escape. Free Roam is for practice. Hide And Seek is a separate hide-or-hunt round.

What is Mines Escape?

A second map place with its own escape badges. Dark Thomas is the usual hunter. Work pickaxe → coal → furnace → TNT → lighter, and trust live prompts for amounts.

What is Play Place?

The third Escape map. Find a screwdriver, power the Gate Power Box if a gate blocks the locks, then bank the five colored keys. Ronald is the hunter.

What is No Power Escape?

Escaping while power stays off for the No Power badge. Use a custom lobby toggle or check a live outage event. Finish a normal Escape first so you can reverse the route without relying on bright rooms.
